The man accused of nearly decapitating his girlfriend during a fight last month was arraigned on murder charges Thursday, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said.

Raul Barrera, 33, is charged with stabbing to death Connecticut native Sarah Coit, his 23-year-old girlfriend, in their Lower East Side apartment. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

"The tragic events that led to today’s indictment demonstrate how quickly a domestic dispute can turn deadly," District Attorney Cy Vance said.

According to court documents, Barrera turned himself in around 2:30 a.m. on April 10, about 30 minutes after allegedly killing Coit. According to court documents, he told police, "I was in a dispute with my girlfriend and it got out of control … She is bad and that's why I'm here to turn myself in. I hit her in the back. There’s a lot of blood."

Barrera is due back in court Aug. 3. His attorney, Paul Feinman, didn't return calls for comment.
