Garden City man dies after being struck by falling debris, NYPD says
A Garden City man has died from a skull fracture after being struck by falling debris from a Manhattan building, the NYPD said Saturday.
The Friday afternoon accident, which also injured a young woman, killed Richard Marchhart, 58, according to Det. Sophia Mason, an NYPD spokeswoman.
Marchhart and the woman, 24, were walking near 434 Broadway, at Howard Street in SoHo, when a worker doing a fire escape inspection seven stories up stepped on a ladder, a piece of which broke off and fell to the street below, Mason said.
The inspector, who slipped but was able to pull herself to safety, was checking the building’s facade when the fire escape stair gave way, the FDNY said. She told medics she didn’t need to go to the hospital.
Medics brought both pedestrians to the hospital. Marchhart died Saturday.
The woman, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized in stable condition with a laceration, Mason said.
Mason said she didn’t know whether the woman and Marchhart were acquainted.
Inspectors from the New York City Department of Buildings were inspecting the site.
