A Queens man was fatally stabbed Friday night on a subway platform after trying to rescue his younger brother from a fight, police and family members said.

Dario Paiva, 27, died from a stab wound in the neck at the elevated 85th Street-Forest Parkway train platform on the J subway line in Woodhaven, Queens, police said. Police said officers arrived at the scene at 11:28 p.m. after receiving a 911 call.

Dario was trying to rescue his 19-year-old brother Khristian, who was attacked by four men on the subway platform, said his nephew, Juan Pilarte, and police.

Police said a dispute between a group of men occurred on the street and ended up on the platform where Dario was stabbed. The perpetrators fled and the older brother collapsed on the mezzanine.

The younger brother had been on the phone with their mother, Norma, when the men confronted him, Pilarte said.

"Then he hung up because he tried to defend himself," Pilarte said.

Dario was at their nearby home and heard the conversation, he said. "He went to see what happened with his little brother," Pilarte said.

Dario was a student at Kingsborough Community College.

"He wanted to be a cop," Pilarte said.

No one has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
