Man sentenced to the max in 2008 sex assault

A 39-year-old Bronx man was sentenced Mondayto 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in her East Village apartment in April 2008.
The case was unsolved until Greg Poirier was convicted in 2009 of sexually motivated burglary in another case and a sample of his genetic material was fed into the state's DNA databank, which matched blood left behind during the 2008 assault.
In the April 18, 2008, case, Poirier followed the victim home and pushed her inside. During the assault, she bit him on the wrist, drawing blood, which was collected at the scene and fed into the state's databank.
During his trial last month, Poirier claimed that the blood was left in the victim's home by another man, who had earlier punched him in the nose.
Poirier plans to appeal both this and his other conviction, for which he is already serving five years, said his attorney, Hershel Katz.
Once released, Poirier will face 20 years of supervision.
