Manhattan boro prez: Make 5th Ave. signs say East Side, not West

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is demanding the Department of Transportation change two dozen bus stop signs along Museum Mile that incorrectly refer to streets as the West Side.

“There some real consequences to getting this wrong,” Scott Stringer said yesterday. “Think about somebody having a heart attack or having a police emergency ... you dial 911 and you tell people that you are on the West Side of 83rd street, only to find out that this is the East Side.”

Stringer said was alerted about the problem after a tourist complained about the erroneous signs, which run from 59th to 110th Streets.

DOT spokesman Seth Solomonow said the signs have been up since the mid-1990s with no complaints.

“While Fifth Avenue is the dividing line between Manhattan's east and west addresses, we will inspect these signs and make any changes with a sticker overlay,” he said.
