Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer drops out of mayor race: Reports

Manhattan borough President Scott Stringer has dropped out of the 2013 race for mayor and jumped into the race for city comptroller, according to published reports.
Stringer, a Democrat who has been borough's president since 2006, has long struggled to gain ground on much higher-profile competitors for the mayor's office, including Speaker Christine Quinn, and yesterday he said he could serve the city better in other ways.
"I thought long and hard, obviously, about running for mayor," Stringer said, according to the Daily News. "I think there's other ways to serve the city other than running for mayor."
He added: "I'm running to help get the city back on sound financial footing."
Stringer's likely competitors for the comptroller's office are City Councilman Daniel Garodnick (D) and Councilman Domenic Recchia (D).
The city's current comptroller, John Liu, is running for mayor, but has had his own trouble gaining traction since a federal investigation into his 2009 campaign finances.
Stringer's office didn't return requests for comment.
