Manhattan celebrates Indian Independence Day parade

Madison Avenue was painted green, white and orange Sunday in celebration of the annual Indian Independence Day parade.
South Asians from all over the metro area were joined by revelers who were interested in experiencing Indian culture first hand, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
"It's so great seeing everyone enjoy it," said Thili Mayadunne, 25, of Flushing.
India became independent from British rule on Aug. 15, 1947, and celebrations in the country are similar to July 4 festivities in America.
Animesh Kumar, 26, who moved to New Jersey six months ago, said he was glad to take part in the New York celebration yesterday, even though he said it was more low key than those back at home.
"In India, it's patriotic in a different way," he said. "There are more army members and bigger floats."
