Marine killed crossing street in NYC
Officials say a Marine apparently in New York City for Fleet Week has been struck by a car and killed while crossing the street.
The accident occurred at 12th Avenue and 49th Street around 1 a.m. Thursday.
Fire Department officials say it is believed the Marine was from the USS Iwo Jima, docked at a nearby pier.
Hours later 12th Avenue was still closed to traffic between 50th and 45th streets.
The Iwo Jima participated in the “Parade of Ships” on Wednesday that kicked off the Fleet Week festivities. It’s docked at a West Side pier near the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
News media outlets say the driver that struck the Marine fled but later returned and was being questioned by police.
