Mayor plans overhaul of NYC data infrastructure

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is planning an overhaul of the city's data infrastructure. He says the move will save the city millions of dollars over the next five years.

Instead of continuing to build on outdated, disparate IT systems at 40 city agencies, the city's Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications will be charged with consolidating them in data centers.

Other plans include shifting the 311 hotline service center under the oversight of the mayor's office. It is currently overseen by the city's IT department.

That department still will oversee 311's staff, budget and infrastructure.- AP
