Median household income in New York up from last year: Census

The median household income in the city climbed to $50,895 last year, up about $1,400 from 2011 but still down about $1,100 from before the recession when adjusted for inflation, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

The bureau put out its American Community Survey statistics, which also showed that the percentage of people without health insurance in the city was down, and that of people earning below the poverty line also decreased.

The city was below the national average for metropolitan areas in some respects. The median household income for all metro areas was $53,607 in 2012, up from $53,545 in 2011, and the poverty rate remained at 15.5%. Still, the uninsured rate was 15.0%, up from 14.7% in 2011.
