Mets deal for backstop Shoppach
Kelly Shoppach may have gotten out just in time.
The Mets, a bastion of stability right now compared with the Red Sox, traded for Boston's backup catcher Tuesday.
Shoppach, who will push Josh Thole for playing time behind the plate, hit .250 with five home runs and 17 RBI for the below-.500 Red Sox.
His best season was in 2008, when he put up 21 homers and 55 RBIs for the Cleveland Indians.
The Red Sox will receive a player to be named later from the Mets in the deal.
