Mets' Dillon Gee out for season: Report

Mets starter Dillon Gee is set to undergo surgery Friday to repair a damaged artery that will almost certainly end his season, ESPNNewYork reported Thursday.

The Daily News also reported that the righthander, who is 6-7 with a 4.10 ERA this season, will be going under the knife and won't start throwing again for six to eight weeks, a time frame that makes a 2012 return unlikely unless the Mets make the playoffs.

Gee was admitted to the hospital Tuesday to treat a blood clot in his right shoulder. He was released Wednesday, the Daily News said, and given the option of taking blood thinners -- a riskier option that would allow him to continue to pitch this season -- or having surgery, which will permanently repair the artery.

Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters earlier this week that Miguel Batista will get the nod when the team needs a fifth starter, which is not until July 21 because the team is off on Monday. The team announced Thursday on its Twitter account that lefty reliever Josh Edgin would take Batista's roster spot. Edgin is 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA in 37.2 innings in 35 games for Triple-A Buffalo. Chris Young will take the mound Friday against the Braves (7:30 p.m., SNY).
