Midtown has the most diverse languages of tweets in the city: Study

Tweets from the Theater District and Times Square are in more languages than anywhere else in the city, according to a new study.

Analyzing more than 8.5 million New York tweets since 2010, a group of British researchers mapped the city's tweets by language, and, unsurprisingly, English came out on top by a huge margin.

The second-most tweeted language is Spanish, followed by Portuguese, according to the study published on spatialanalysis.co.uk. Bengali is the least-tweeted language in the city, with only four tweets sent in the language since 2010.

Though the city's tweets are overwhelmingly in English, certain areas have big, concentrated numbers of non-English tweets.

Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood, for example, are the areas with the most concentrated Spanish tweets. Midtown East and Kips Bay have more Arabic tweets than anywhere in the city, and the Coney Island area has the most Turkish and Ukrainian tweets in the city.

The areas with the fewest percentage of English tweets are South Brooklyn, Coney Island, Jackson Heights and Liberty Island.
