Miguel Cabrera beats trout for AL MVP

It's a shame the Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera and the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout had their incredible seasons during the same year in the same league.

In the end, only Cabrera gets to take home the American League MVP trophy, beating out Trout 362 points to 281, in the voting announced on Thursday. Cabrera received 22 first-place votes, while Trout garnered the other six.

Cabrera became the first Triple Crown winner since Carl Yastrzemski accomplished the feat for the Boston Red Sox in 1967. He led the American League with a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs. His Tigers played their way to the World Series, where they were swept by the San Francisco Giants.

Trout, who was named the AL Rookie of the Year on Monday, defied expectations for a 20-year-old - he turned 21 on Aug. 7 - by hitting .326 with 30 home runs and 83 RBIs as the Angels leadoff hitter after being called up to the majors on April 28. His 129 runs scored led all major leaguers. Trout also led baseball with 49 stolen bases.

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano finished fourth in the voting and shortstop Derek Jeter was seventh. Closer Rafael Soriano (5 points) and platoon outfielder Raul Ibanez (1 point) also received votes.
