The mother of Baby Hope — the child whose decomposed and abused body was found stuffed in a cooler by a Manhattan highway in 1991 — was found, NYPD officials said Tuesday, a break in an infamous case that has stumped investigators for a generation.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly would not name the woman or give details about her but said she is cooperating with the investigation, which began in July 1991 when the child’s body was found in a wooded area beside the Henry Hudson Parkway near Dyckman Street in Inwood.
