Ninety percent of the guns used in crimes in the city come from other states, according to stats released by the mayor and police commissioner Wednesday.

The report, based ondata from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, found thatthe number of outside guns used in crimes rose from 1,994 in 2010 to 2,186 in 2011, a 9.6 % increase .

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is the co-chair of the mayors against illegal guns coalition, called the statistics troubling and reissued his call for stricter national gun safety legislation.

"The reality is laws in states across the nation and in Washington, D.C. have a real impact on the safety of New Yorkers," he said in a statement.

Virginia led the list of states that contributed to the growing number, with 322 guns recovered by NYPD originating from that state in 2011. The mayor noted that state doesn't require background checks at gun shows.

North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia rounded out the other states with 255, 251, 237 and 227 guns, respectively, originating from those locations.

"There's no shortage of weapons flowing north from the south through the iron pipeline," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement.

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of guns recovered by the NYPD dropped 44% from 7,059 to 3,980. The number of guns that came from New York dropped 48 % from 471 to 247 during that time period however the number of out of state guns only went down by 22%, according to the study.
