In the German film “3,” a couple beats the doldrums of their 20-year relationship by striking up affairs — but unbeknownst to them, the affairs are with the same man.
Hanna (Sophie Rois) is a brilliant TV personality, Simon (Sebastian Schipper) commissions art projects, and the unwitting third wheel is Adam (Devid Striesow), a handsome scientist who spends his spare time swimming, playing soccer, visiting an ex-wife and son, and having lots of sweaty sex with both genders.
Directed by Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”), “3” is an awkward mash-up of erotica, comedy and obtuse philosophizing.
The ending, while pat and predictable, does leave you with a pleasant kumbaya buzz. It’s nice to encounter a movie that encourages open-mindedness. Still, those in a less charitable mood will probably just feel disappointed.
