All Good Things
2 stars
Directred by Andrew Jarecki
Starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst
“Capturing the Friedmans” filmmaker Andrew Jarecki’s first foray into narrative storytelling finds him on much less sure footing.
The movie tells the story of Robert Durst, heir to the Durst real estate fortune, who was questioned but never charged in the 1982 disappearance of his wife, Kathleen, and the 2000 murder of Susan Berman.
Here, he’s thinly disguised as David Marks (Ryan Gosling), with Kirsten Dunst playing Kathleen, renamed Katie. Their story chronicles real estate corruption, marital disintegration, madness, transvestitism and more.
While the movie is well-acted, it devolves into a misshapen flop with no shape to the narrative and no larger truths to be gained.
