The MTA needs your help to choose the next best transit app.

The agency Wednesday unveiled 49 new apps as part of its App Quest competition, and commuters can vote for their favorite to take home the Popular Choice award (and take home $1,000) in the competition. The apps range from services that provide maps and directions to ones that give you information about underground musicians and more.

A panel of nine judges will decide on the official winners of the contest, giving away prizes for first place ($20,000) through third place ($5,000), as well as honors for Best MTA Wish List App ($2,000), the Large Organization Recognition Award (no cash) and two honorable mentions ($1,000 each).

Marissa Shorenstein of AT&T said the competition got judges with expertise in technology and transit, and that it highlights the ways technology is improving everyday life in the city.

“It really brings together our interest in innovation and accessibility to mobile technology,” she said. “New Yorkers are always on the go and these apps will really help connect them to information to improve their commutes.”

We’ve looked at all of the apps and rounded up our 10 favorites. To check out the competition and cast your vote for the best, head to 2013mtaappquest.challengepost.com.
