Fare hikes to hit Sunday

Subway and bus riders will feel lighter in the wallet come Sunday when the 2015 fare hikes go into effect.

Fares will be raised a quarter to $2.75, though passengers get an 11% bonus for every $5.50 that gets put on the card. Meanwhile, people who pay for the unlimited rides will have to shell out $116.50 for a 30-day card, up from $112; and $31 for a weekly card, up from $30.

This is the eighth increase in MetroCard prices in the past 10 years, with hikes now scheduled for every two years, meaning the MTA will ask more from riders in 2017. The MTA plans to pull in 4% more revenue from riders each fare increase. The additional money coming in from passengers is expected to be $467 million, according to MTA financial documents.

But the hike is hitting riders at a time when service has been deteriorating due to busted equipment and rails, as well as delays from overcrowding.
