MTA police probe deaths of Davon Smallwood and Ariana O'Neal

MTA police said they are investigating a Monday double fatality at the Hollis train station in which a couple "jumped in front of an oncoming" train.

A Long Island Rail Road spokesman said the couple, a man and a woman from Queens Village, jumped in front of a westbound train as it passed through the station at about 10 p.m.

The couple was identified early Wednesday by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police as Davon Smallwood, 25, and Ariana O'Neal, 21.

The train, which originated at the Huntington station and was headed to Penn Station, was passing Hollis station at its maximum allowable speed of 80 mph when the engineer told police he spotted the two "just moments before they jumped in front of his cab from the middle of the westbound platform," the LIRR spokesman said.

The impact broke the windshield of the engineer's cab, the LIRR said, and he was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset where he was treated for cuts and released.

Train service was delayed in the area through the early morning hours but returned to normal for the morning rush hour, the LIRR said.
