MTA releases transit data; cool mobile apps to come
Mobile apps helping riders figure out which subway elevators work and the least crowded time to ride the train could soon be coming down the pike, as the MTA released 53 transit sets to developers Wednesday evening.
The data dump included stats on turnstile usage, which could be harnessed to figure out what time a station is the least crowded and straphangers are most likely to find a seat, said Nicholas Bergson-Shilcock, 25, a developer who coordinates the transit data Meetup sessions, which the MTA now attends.
“That’s very useful for trip planning,” Bergson-Shilcock said.
More than 200 computer geeks signed up for the MTA’s first transit data conference, which sold out. The data now freely available to developers includes:
- Elevator/Escalator status updated every five minutes
- Turnstile rotations by station, by hour
- On-Time Performance for all lines
- Total subway and bus ridership
- Number of times a wheelchair lift is used to board a bus passenger
