MTA wants to add more surveillance cameras in buses

The MTA is planning on fitting a lot more buses with surveillance cameras.

The agency’s bus committee recommended buying 1,150 bus cameras in addition to the 426 that the MTA previously purchased. Nearly 300 are already recording bus routes.

NYC Transit president Tom Prendergast said video surveillance onboard buses is “vital" to "maintain a transit network that is as safe and secure as possible.”

The additional cameras will cost more than $22 million if approved by the MTA’s board Wednesday.

Each bus will be equipped with several cameras that monitor the driver’s seat, the bus’ entrance and passenger seating.

The MTA began installing shields to protect drivers from riders after several violent attacks in recent years. More than 450 buses have the dividers.
