Known for his Tin Pan Alley affectations and sweet ukulele skills, Mississippi-based indie-pop artist Dent May pivots to the decade of macramé and polyester on his third album.
“Warm Blanket” is both the title and the best descriptor for May’s soft-focus croon, channeled here in the service of the sort of unabashed, sensitive-guy sucker punches that solid-gold AM radio would play today if that distinction still existed.
Like a Southern-made Andy Gibb, May sweetly hustles through the cruise-ship disco of “Born Too Late” and bares his heart on the syrupy jam “Do I Cross Your Mind.” “Blanket” is a horns-and-strings wonderland that walks the same tightrope of reverence that allowed Sloan’s “Everything You’ve Done Wrong” to sit on “The Virgin Suicides” soundtrack alongside genre originals, and May is so winning it hardly seems like a stunt at all.
