Nantucket's late summer allure
If you think it's too late in the season to pop up to Nantucket, that preppy, pretty windswept island 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, think again.
Now is actually the perfect time of year to visit this quintessentially New England town, located less than five hours (or one by boat from Hyannis, Mass.) from NYC, as the cobblestoned streets are still bustling and the beaches -- all of which are open to all -- remain packed (though slightly less so) with locals and vacationers alike.
BEACHES
There are more than 80 miles of pristine beach to explore on this 48-square-mile island. Rent a bike from Young's Bicycle Shop and pedal right over to Jettie's Beach, one island favorite. Perched on Nantucket Sound, this beach boasts changing rooms, a restaurant and a bar that offers "Buck a Shuck" specials, with shrimp, clams and oysters from 3 to 6 p.m.
Each beach has something that sets it apart. Ideal for small kids, Children's Beach is known for its shallow harbor waters and fun events for kids. Three miles from town, Surfside Beach is beloved for its waves. For harbor views, ask a local to point you to the Brant Point Lighthouse Beach, with a still-in-operation lighthouse, just outside town.
RAINY DAY ACTION
If it pours while you're on the island, don't despair. Feel the mist and smell Nantucket's enveloping salt spray while you shop at the many charming boutiques downtown. (Note: No chain stores are allowed here.)
Or, spend some time at the Whaling Museum, which pays tribute to the rich history of Nantucket's whalers.
DINING
Start the day at the new Wicked Island Bakery for a Breakfast Sandy (sandwich) or sweet roll. For a picnic lunch to remember, head to Something Natural, which has been baking bread and fixing custom sandwiches for decades. If you're looking for something fancier, head to The Proprietors Bar & Table, which opened this summer, for a global spin on island-grown produce and locally caught fish.
LODGING
Two-night minimums are to be expected during the summer, but you'll find discounts and deals after Labor Day. Right now, 10% discounts are being offered at The Nantucket Hotel & Resort, arguably the best hotel on the island, through Aug. 29, provided you book at least two nights. Within walking distance of town, this friendly hotel has two pools, antique firetruck rides to and from the beach, and afternoon cookies, lemonade and watermelon served poolside. There are numerous other lodging options too, from B&Bs to midrange hotels.
