Nearly 700 cops to be assigned at WTC site

The World Trade Center site will eventually be home to the largest police command post in the city, with 673 officers assigned there, Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday.

Kelly, who spoke at a Police Foundation breakfast in Manhattan, told the audience that the site remains prone to terrorist attacks and a security plan is needed as the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 approaches.

Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne told amNewYork that the hundreds of officers will be deployed in different shifts and their numbers “added incrementally until the entire complex is finished and occupied.”

It’s still unclear how many will be new hires, though without federal aid, the city is expected to pay for the new cops, Kelly said.

Once fully staffed, the command will eclipse the city’s two biggest precincts, the 75th in Brooklyn and Midtown South. Each has about 400 officers.

The police staffing does not include Port Authority officers, who also will be working at the site.
