In what has to qualify as one of the city’s biggest Extreme Makeover swaps, the Whitney is to break ground Tuesday on a new 200,000-square-foot building in the Meatpacking District.
The Renzo Piano building, which will be on Gansevoort St, between the Hudson River and the newly expanded High Line, gives the Whitney new space for its collection, exhibitions, education and performing arts programs in a once humble ’hood that has become progressively more upscale.
After the Whitney’s new quarters are completed and scheduled to open in 2015, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will take over the Whitney’s iconic Marcel Breuer building at 945 Madison Ave. for a period of eight years, with a possibility of extending the agreement.
The two museums plan to collaborate on collections sharing, publications and other educational activities.
