Jack Reacher

‘Jack Reacher’
There are a lot of Tom Cruise movies I’d rather watch than “Jack Reacher,” his recent thriller in which Cruise stars as the title tough guy who helps investigate a shooting. It’s a long, somewhat tedious film with some good performances from character actors such as Richard Jenkins and, inexplicably, director Werner Herzog. That said, it is still a lesser work from Cruise, who is a typically consistent, if not solid, actor. But you’re left kind of wishing that Cruise had just made another “Mission: Impossible” movie. Which he will be doing. And it is slated to be directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also directed — you guess it — “Jack Reacher.” And now I don’t know what to wish for. (DVD, $29.99; Blu-ray/DVD combo, $39.99)

‘Superman: Unbound’
Get amped up for “Man of Steel” with this solid animated feature pitting Superman against the alien menace Brainiac, who might have a connection to the heroes home planet of Krypton. (DVD, $19.98; Blu-ray/DVD combo, $24.98)

‘30 Rock: Season Seven’
I know I’m not alone in wishing that Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Alec Baldwin and the rest of the cast of this amazing sitcom could play these roles forever. At least the show went out on a high note. (DVD, $44.98)

‘Citizen Hearst’
This documentary looking at William Randolph Hearst and the vast company he founded was certainly interesting, but it’s a bit one-sided. (DVD, $19.98)

‘Fringe: The Complete Fifth Season’
‘Fringe: The Complete Series’

Fox’s smart sci-fi series is over, but it’s likely that most of you haven’t seen it (if ratings are any indicator). This show — starring John Noble, Joshua Jackson and Anna Torv — is best watched in chunks, so give it a try on a rainy weekend and thank me later. It was created by J.J. Abrams, you know ... (Fifth season: DVD, $39.98; Blu-ray, $49.99; Complete series: DVD, $159.96; Blu-ray, $197.50)

‘K-9: The Complete Series’
This “Doctor Who” spinoff features a robotic dog and a group of young adventures taking on threats from any time or place. This is an important collection for “Doctor Who” completists and anyone looking for some fun sci-fi candy. (DVD, $29.97)
