‘The Muppet Movie: The Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition’
There have been some great “Muppet” movies, like the most recent one that hit theaters in 2011, and there have been some not-so-good “Muppet” movies, like the hard-to-watch “Muppet Treasure Island.” For my money, though, this first big screen “Muppet” film — making its debut on Blu-ray — is the pinnacle of cinematic Muppetry. The film follows everyone’s favorite frog Kermit, as he works to fulfill his dreams of making it to Hollywood and landing a rich-and-famous contract. Along the way, he encounters some familiar friends (Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem band), some famous guest cameos (Steve Martin, Orson Welles, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor) and a serious baddie in Doc Hopper (Charles Durning), who wants the talented frog to work for his frog legs restaurant. Funny, adorable, technically impressive (the frog rides a bicycle!) and filled with excellent songs — including the Oscar-nominated “Rainbow Connection” — “The Muppet Movie” is a certified classic and a great film for people of any age.
