No charges for cabbie

who struck tourist

The Manhattan district attorney's office Thursday said it would not pursue charges against the cabbie who struck a British tourist, severing her leg, in midtown this summer.

District Attorney Cy Vance's office said that investigators looked into the Aug. 20 incident at Rockefeller Center, in which Faysal Kabir Mohammad Himon struck Sian Green after witnesses said he drove erratically after squabbling with a bicyclist.

The district attorney's office said there wasn't enough evidence to show Himon, 24, broke the law.

Green's legal team said she and her family were shocked.

The fate of a wayward bottlenose dolphin that entered a polluted Brooklyn creek yesterday morning wasn't known Thursday night, but the outlook was good.

Shortly before noon, NYPD divers removed a floating barrier that was keeping the dolphin from leaving Coney Island Creek, where it was first spotted about 10:30 a.m.

Floating barriers like the one that was removed are used to help contain trash and debris in city waterways.

"We removed that so he could make his way out, and we were told to let him be after that," a police spokesman said.

It wasn't immediately known whether the dolphin had left the creek for safer waters. A crowd of onlookers gathered after the dolphin was spotted at the shallow, muddy creek at Cropsey Avenue and Bay 54th Street.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Prevention told News12 New York that because the dolphin was seen swimming freely in the water and wasn't stranded, it was probably healthy.

No injuries after

ferry hits pier

Passengers on the Staten Island Ferry were shaken Thursday when their boat came in for a hard landing after experiencing a mechanical problem.

City transportation officials said nobody was injured, and there was no apparent damage to the vessel.

The problem happened on the 2 p.m. ferry from Manhattan to Staten Island.

Passengers told the Staten Island Advance the ferry was partway across the harbor when it turned around for the Manhattan terminal. -- AP
