Man, 80, dies after being hit by bus

An 80-year-old man was hit by a bus Wednesday and killed while trying to cross a Manhattan street, authorities said.

Police said Boris Kidreman was crossing Third Avenue at East 20th Street about 10:30 a.m. when he was struck by an MTA bus.

He was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the bus had the green light and Kidreman was crossing against the signal.

The bus driver remained at the scene and has not been charged.

10 staffers charged after Rikers assault

New York City prosecutors said Wednesday 10 city Department of Correction employees have been indicted in connection with a gang assault of an inmate and subsequent cover-up at the Rikers Island jail.

The indictment was unsealed in the Bronx Wednesday following an 11-month investigation. Seven of the 10 were charged with assault and attempted gang assault, and all 10 have been charged with evidence tampering.

Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said two Correction officials ordered staff members to assault an inmate. Johnson said the officials then faked their reports, claiming the inmate had attacked first. The inmate suffered fractures to both of his eye sockets, a broken nose and other facial injuries that caused his eyes to swell shut.

NYPD sued over lack of interpreter

Five Hispanic women have filed a federal lawsuit saying the NYPD refused them interpretation services when they were victimized by their partners.

The women said they requested Spanish-language help but were denied. In addition, they contend police ridiculed them because they could not speak English.

The New York Police Department and city law department call the suit meritless, saying the department has more officers who speak foreign languages than any department in the country. The department provides comprehensive interpretation services, they said.

The suit, which seeks an unspecified amount of money, also asks for changes in the system. It was filed on behalf of the women by Legal Services NYC. The Violence Intervention Program, an organization that helps Hispanic victims of domestic violence, also is a plaintiff in the case.

Brockington was arrested in South Carolina 10 days after the crime. He also was convicted of burglary and weapon possession.

A separate case is pending against another defendant.

Murphy was a senior at Murray Bergtraum High School for Business Careers. She was a nationally ranked basketball star.

Historic documents on display at library

The New York Public Library will display two rare pieces of American history for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

An original handwritten copy of the Bill of Rights and a copy of the Declaration of Independence in Thomas Jefferson's hand will be shown for three days: July 1, 2 and 3.

The two documents are being shown together for the first time. They're rarely displayed for preservation reasons.

Jefferson's Declaration of Independence contains his condemnation of slavery that was excised from the final text. The Bill of Rights is one of at least 14 original copies sent to the states for ratification in 1789. The library's copy contains 12 amendments, not 10. Two amendments weren't ratified.

Both documents were purchased by the library in 1896.

A Bronx high school teacher has been arrested on charges he had sex with a 16-year-old student.

Brian Kearins, 33, was arrested Wednesday on charges including rape, criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.

Kearins has been a teacher at Lehman High School in the Bronx since 2003.

The Department of Education said it will seek to fire him.

Another Bronx teacher was charged last week with raping a 10-year-old student. Anthony Criscuolo was arraigned on charges including rape, predatory sexual assault against a child and endangering the welfare of a child.

Wednesday was the last day of school for New York City's public school system.
