New York Jets weather storm from Brett Favre, beat Vikings
Brett Favre made it interesting at the end, but the Jets’ defense rose up yet again in a water-logged 29-20 Jets victory over the Vikings last night.
Nickelback Dwight Lowery gave the Jets the final cushion for their fourth straight win when he brought back an interception off Brett Favre 26 yards with 1:30 remaining in the game for his first career touchdown.
For much of the night, the Jets' defense treated former Gang Greener Favre as rudely as the quarterback allegedly treated dirty-text target Jenn Sterger. They sacked Favre twice in the first half, and hit him a number of other times on their way to 4-1 and sole possession of first place in the AFC East.
Favre helped the Jets (4-1) along, too, with two lost fumbles the Jets turned into a pair of Nick Folk's five field goals. Favre set the NFL record for quarterback fumbles with his third-quarter flub. But he later threw his 500th career touchdown pass to new teammate Randy Moss, who was otherwise shut down by cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
The touchdown narrowed the score to 12-7, but Folk hit a field goal and Shonn Greene scored on a 23-yard touchdown run.
Favre continued the onslaught, however, and found Harvin for his second touchdown, a leaping grab in the end zone over Jim Leonard.
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez averaged just 4.3 yards gained per throw (191 yards on 21-for-44 passing).
