Cory Booker has a message for Barack Obama's presidential campaign: "Tone it down."

The Newark mayor spoke candidly on "Meet the Press" Sunday, denouncing the president's recent set of campaign ads that attacked Bain Capital, the private equity firm that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney used to run.

"If you look at the totality of Bain Capital's record they’ve done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses, and this to me, I'm very uncomfortable with," he said.

Booker, a Democrat, clarified his position on his Twitter account later in the day.

"I will fight hard for Obama to win. But just as his '08 campaign did, I believe we must elevate & not denigrate," he tweeted.
