No-jail plea for suspect in 9/11 remains bldg fire
A Harvard Law School graduate who set a fire at a temporary New York City repository for Sept. 11 victims’ remains has been offered a no-jail plea deal because he was so drunk he barely remembers being there.
Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Rena Uviller on Wednesday acknowledged the pain Brian Schroeder inflicted on 9/11 victims’ families. But she said she didn’t “see any point in ruining another life.” The Memorial Park fire was on Oct. 31, 2009.
The judge said Schroeder must pay $25,000 in restitution within a year and avoid getting arrested again. If he fails to meet the conditions, he faces up to 7 years in prison on felony burglary, arson and other charges.
Sept. 11 family member Charles Wolf told the Daily News he agreed with the judge’s decision.
