Embattled schools chancellor Cathie Black has gone on permanent spring break after just three months – and few were sad to see her go.

“She shouldn’t have been in that position to begin with," said public school parent Valerie McMillan, 34, of Chelsea. "She wasn’t qualified.”

Black, 66, was blasted from day one for lacking substantial educational experience and for numerous public gaffes that resulted in dismal approval ratings.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg apparently told Black she was out Thursday morning, but he publicly said the separation was mutual.

"I take full responsibility for the fact that this has not worked out as either of us had hoped," he said.

Deputy Mayor for Education Dennis Walcott, 59, will replace her.

A beaming Black said that she bought a pair of running shoes. “And so I’m off,” she added, though where exactly wasn’t clear.

"It's been a great privilege to serve the city of New York … I wish everyone the best,” she said.

State Education Commissioner David Steiner also resigned Thursday.

United Federation of Teachers President President Michael Mulgrew said Black’s departure was “an opportunity to rethink its failed educational strategy … and to start listening to the parents and teachers."
