NTSB crews discover damaged propeller on ferry that crashed into Pier 11

Investigators looking into last week's ferry crash at a lower Manhattan pier say the boat had a damaged propeller.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday it is still examining the Seastreak Wall Street boat, but said it determined its port propeller was damaged during the accident. Tests on the boat's steering systems showed those devices worked properly.

Team members will conduct a further survey of the vessel when they haul it from the water for repairs. At the same time, the Army Corps of Engineers will examine the approach to Pier 11 to determine if there are any obstructions that caused the Jan. 9 accident.

The ship, which had 300 New Jersey commuters, crashed into the pier traveling at about 10 knots. More than 80 people were injured with 15 suffered serious injuries. The crew passed Breathalyzer tests and are fully cooperating with the investigation. The NTSB also interviewed the injured passengers and some of the pedestrians who were near the pier to get a better sense of what happened.
