Number of kids requiring summer school rises

The number of New York City students in grades 3-8 who must attend summer school due to poor math and English scores is up from last year.
 
The city Education Department said Monday that about 34,000 elementary and middle school children will be attending summer classes. That’s up from 22,800 last year. Students who score 1 or 2 out of a possible 4 are required to attend summer school or repeat a grade.
 
Education Department spokesman Matthew Mittenthal told The New York Times that the increase did not represent an equally significant drop in the test scores.
 
The test results will be released by the state in July. But because the city grades its own exams, it can estimate where the cutoffs for passing will be.
