For his 70th birthday, Paul McCartney was honored by the eminence grise of the psychedelic art scene, Peter Max, with a splashy painting of the rock icon in his cute Beatle days at the artist's West 65th Street studio.

McCartney, "is a good friend. We're going to find out where he is," to arrange delivery of the acrylic tribute, Max said.

"Maybe I'll ask Paul if he wants to sign it."

Max said that while he plans to give the completed work to the musician, he plans to paint two more replicas: "One for me and one set for some museum."

Max, who is 74, began the painting about a week ago. The likeness is of a much younger McCartney.

"He didn't sit for it," said Max, who worked off of a photo.

Max said he listens to rock 'n' roll while churning out his canvases. And what happened to all the peace and love that the psychedelic era of the 1960s promised?

"It's spread out everywhere! It's existing," Max said.
