New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein calls a decision to close 19 failing schools a “sad reality.”
Klein was loudly booed by a crowd of thousands as he spoke at an eight-hour hearing on Tuesday night. He said the schools did not meet educational standards.
The Panel for Education Policy voted early Wednesday to close them.
The panel is controlled by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It sets policy for public schools that have about 1.1 million pupils.
