The NYPD will be teaming up with police in Nassau and Suffolk counties early next month in a five-day exercise to test law enforcement ability to interdict a "dirty bomb," an explosive device terrorists could use to spew radioactive material over a wide area.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday that nine other regional law enforcement agencies will also take part in the drill, which will involve activity in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The massive exercise, from April 5 to April 9, will require police activity on land, including the rail systems and highways, said Kelly, adding that the public will see increased law enforcement action, including traffic checkpoints. The increased activity on roadways and transit hubs leading to New York City may cause traffic delays in off-peak hours, Kelly said.

The regional dirty bomb drill is part of the federally funded Securing the Cities Initiative
