Could New York be on the way to joining Amsterdam and Berlin as one of the world's great cities for bicyclists?

City officials said Friday that they would roll out a new bike-share program in July with 420 sidewalk rental stations.

For an annual fee of $95, bicyclists will be able to grab a ride, keep it for up to 45 minutes, and return it to any other station.

The city hopes to eventually have 10,000 bikes in circulation.

For now, the program will be limited to Manhattan south of Central park, and parts of Brooklyn and Queens within an easy pedal of the East River bridges.

Some motorists see the program as unrealistic. They've been grumbling about bikes taking up parking spots that could be used for cars.
