NYC teen accused of acid attack on classmate

A teenage girl is accused of trying to blind a classmate with hydrochloric acid during a chemistry class at their Brooklyn high school.

Sixteen-year-old Zhanna Smsarian was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Thursday on charges including first-degree attempted assault.

Prosecutors say Smsarian admitted she poured acid onto the 15-year-old classmate in an effort to burn the girl's "eyes out." The classmate was taken to a hospital burn unit, treated and released.

The acid had been diluted for a laboratory experiment at Fort Hamilton High School. A teacher flushed the classmate's eyes and face with water.

Smsarian was released on $7,500 bail and ordered to refrain from contacting the classmate.

Her attorney, Igor Vaysberg, said his client has never been in trouble and was an honor-roll student.
