An off-duty Bronx cop upset over a NYPD ticket-fixing scandal attempted suicide early Wednesday by jumping onto a subway track and grabbing the third rail, according to published reports.
Robert McGee, 62, landed on the track on the No. 1 line at the 238th Street station in Riverdale just before 5 a.m., according to the New York Post. He was found with a burned hand and was taken to the North Central Bronx Hospital. He was in stable condition, according to reports.
The NYPD declined to comment Wednesday.
According to reports, McGee had testified in a grand jury probe and was reportedly distraught that he may have to testify against other officers. The scandal became widely reported in April, when the Bronx district attorney was investigating the possibility of cops tossing out traffic tickets as favors to family, friends and even celebrities.
The grand jury’s investigation is reportedly expected to result in indictments against several officers, including for corruption charges.
The New York Times said McGee testified with immunity and is not expected to face criminal charges.
Still, the process appeared to be taking its toll on the veteran cop, and McGee’s wife told police he had been acting “suicidal,” the Post said.
