An officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in the Bronx left one NYPD officer wounded and the suspect dead, NYPD officials said.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said two uniformed officers from the 42nd Precinct were on patrol when they observed a man in the vicinity of 3822 Third Ave. in the Claremont section of the Bronx. The man had multiple arrests on his record, including his most recent for possession of a weapon after jumping a subway station turnstile, said Mayor Eric Adams, who joined Sewell and other officials at a news conference early Wednesday.

One officer engaged in a foot pursuit of the man, while the other officer followed in the patrol car, as the man ran to the intersection of Bathgate Avenue and Claremont Parkway, then ran north on Claremont, where Sewell said gunfire was exchanged between officers and the man.

During that exchange, Sewell said at the news conference, one officer was struck in the left arm and the man was shot in the head.

The suspect, identified by the NYPD as a 25-year-old man, died at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

The officer was treated and later released.

Sewell said a 9-mm Glock handgun was recovered at the scene.

"I have to commend our courageous officers," Sewell said. "This is what we ask of them to do...They're on the streets every day and night risking their lives for New Yorkers."
