New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says an officer is in critical condition after he was shot in the face while responding to a break-in at a Brooklyn apartment.

Officer Peter Figoski was at the bottom of a staircase leading from the street to the basement apartment early Monday. Police say he was hit once.

The officer’s partner saw the gunman take off down the street, chased him, and arrested him.

The partner, Glenn Estrada, was being treated for shoulder injuries.

A second suspect is at large.

Police say the suspects were hiding in a side room as the officers arrived and were trying to flee when the shooting happened.
