An off-duty NYPD cop attending a vigil in Manhattan for a community member was shot in the foot, Chief Jeff Maddrey said Saturday night.

The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon outside of the Manhattanville Community Center at 3250 Broadway in Harlem.

Maddrey, head of the NYPD's Housing Bureau, said investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an earlier dispute at the center involving the shooters. The officer, whose identity wasn't released, wasn't involved in the dispute, Maddrey said.

The officer, who works in the Bronx, didn't immediately realize he was shot and didn't experience pain until on-duty officers arrived at the scene, Maddrey said. The officer's injury wasn't life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.

He had two injuries in his left foot, but it was not immediately clear if the injuries were an entry and exit wound from one shot, officials said. The wounded officer was being treated Saturday evening in Mount Sinai Morningside hospital on Amsterdam Avenue at 114th Street.

"This is very hurtful," Maddrey said. "People in our community, in our neighborhoods, shouldn't have to live like this."

The officer was the seventh from the NYPD to be shot in the new year, including two who died.

Two or three people were being sought by the NYPD in connection with the shooting, one of whom appears to have been the shooter, according to a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity. The injured officer provided investigators with a description of the suspects.

Police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage as they attempt to identify the suspects. No arrests were immediately made in the case.

The shooting comes less than a week after the funeral of Wilbert Mora, one of two NYPD cops fatally shot on Jan. 21, also in upper Manhattan.
