A police officer was in stable condition after being shot Sunday night on Staten Island, and the suspected shooter has died, the New York City Police Department said.

The officer, whose identity was not released, was shot late Sunday night near Lyman Avenue in Shore Acres near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, police said.

The NYPD tweeted that "an officer has been shot and is in critical but stable condition."

The department said "a male suspect was also been shot and has succumbed to his injuries. We are investigating and will update as more information becomes available."
