A New York City police officer committed suicide while on duty in Queens Thursday night, a department spokesman said Friday.
The officer, 28, whose name has not been released, shot himself within the 111th Precinct, where he was assigned, said the spokesman, Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne.
Police did not say precisely where the shooting occurred or describe the circumstances.
Dozens of uniform police and detectives converged on 211th Street near 85th Avenue in the Hollis Hills section of Queens at about 11 p.m. Thursday.
It was around that time the officer was transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and was pronounced dead, police said.
The precinct where the officer worked covers the neighborhoods of Auburndale, Bayside, Douglaston, Fresh Meadows, Hollis Hills and Little Neck.
