NYPD pedestrian safety initiative yields thousands of citations, 226 arrests

The NYPD Tuesday released the results of a citywide pedestrian safety initiative.

It resulted in 4,612 double parking summonses, 2,857 moving violation summonses and 226 arrests for suspended licenses around the city.

The Dec. 9-13 crackdown, which involved extra officers assigned to enforce traffic laws at shopping districts and major pedestrian crossings, was intended to reduce conditions that kill or injure pedestrians and to reduce traffic infractions.

In addition to the parking violations (double parking is believed to increase the risk to pedestrian safety), other violations included failing to yield to pedestrians, running red lights and turning improperly.

While the enforcement action was concluded Dec. 13, another one "could pop up again at any time," said a police source.
