A 52-year-old man died after being shot Monday night in the Bronx by officers who had responded to a 911 call about a dispute, the NYPD said.
When the two patrol officers arrived at Prospect Avenue and 181st Street about 7:40 p.m., they were told a man armed with a knife was running after another male in the street, police said.
“The officers encountered the male subject armed with a combat-type knife chasing another male,” Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said in a news conference near the scene. “The officers confronted the subject and repeatedly directed him to drop the knife.”
But the armed man did not obey orders, police said.
“The subject then turned toward the officers, with the knife in hand,” Harrison said, “and the two officers discharged their firearms.”
The man was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name was withheld, pending notification of family.
Harrison said the confrontation was caught on officers’ body cameras.
A military knife was recovered. No other suspects are being sought, the NYPD said. The department tweeted a photo of a knife with a black handle.
The NYPD said the department is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
